NEXT STEP: Emerging Leaders Summit is designed to he lp cultivate, connect, engage and empower South Dakota’s future bank leader s. This event will encourage emerging bank leaders to find and express thei r voices within their organizations, communities and the banking industry a nd provide opportunities to network and exchange ideas with other industry professionals. It will also increase emerging bank leaders’ knowledge of to pics of interest to the banking industry and promote involvement and advoca cy.

Leadership means different things to different people. Join David Owe
n as he discusses the difference between leading “front and center” and lea
ding from the second row… and beyond. Owen will share stories of key leader
s with whom he has worked and what makes them stand out. Owen grew up in Ra
pid City and attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. He has
been a chamber of commerce executive his entire career, meaning he has avoi
ded both private and public sector employment. After serving as the assista
nt manager of the Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce, Owen ran local chambers in
Pittsburg, Kan., and Missoula, Mont. He served as president of the Montana
Chamber of Commerce for six years before becoming president of the South Da
kota Chamber of Commerce & Industry in 1998.

ty and awareness. With cultural intelligence, you’ll know how to strategica
lly use cultural differences to come up with more innovative solutions. Jam
es Rattling Leaf, Sr. is a certified associate trainer in cultural intellig
ence with a specialty in tribal/indigenous ways of knowing. He has 25 years
of experience as a cross cultural/broker resource to the federal governmen
t, higher education institutions and nonprofits in developing and maintaini
ng positive, ongoing working relationships with federally and non-federally
recognized Indian tribes, tribal colleges and universities, and tribal com
munities. Rattling Leaf is a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe and has a de
gree from Sinte Gleska University.

Join Curt Everson as he muses about th
e legislative process and how you can get involved and become influential i
n your communities. As the president of the SDBA, Everson has been responsi
ble for the Association’s government relations activities since 2002. He wi
ll talk about the impact that emerging bank leaders can have on advocacy an
d how and where they can get involved. He will explain the process of legis
lation, how to develop relationships with local lawmakers, and state versus
national advocacy. Prior to working for the SDBA, Everson worked for the S
tate of South Dakota including leading the Bureau of Finance and Management
for seven years. Everson is retiring from the SDBA at the end of the year.

journey. During that time, he’s met countless people whose lives were fore
ver changed by acts of gratitude—not received but given. “This is life chan
ging stuff, and I’m anxious to share their stories,” he said. Smith has bee
n a professional speaker for more than a decade. He is also a published aut
hor. Smith has also been a bill collector, solar collector salesman and a f
und raiser. Drawing on his lifetime experiences, Smith peppers his talks wi
th anecdotes and personal stories to illustrate key points. He feels he is
better equipped to be a storyteller, not a preacher. A graduate of South Da
kota State University in Brookings, Smith is also the author of the book “T
he Richest Man in Town.”

From Prole, Iowa, Fordyce is known throughout the tri-state area as the “envelope lady.” She and her colleague have joined forces to resurrect the art of the hand-written note and radiate joy into the world, one envelope at a time.
