ABOUT THE EVENT

NEXT STEP: Emerging Leaders Summit is designed to help cultivate, connect, engage and empower South Dakota’s future bank leaders. This event will encourage emerging bank leaders to find and express their voices within their organizations, communities and the banking industry and provide opportunities to network and exchange ideas with other industry professionals. It will also increase emerging bank leaders’ knowledge of topics of interest to the banking industry and promote involvement and advocacy.

Please register by 10/23 to ensure your goodie bag arrives in time for the event.  Your materials will be sent to your registration address.  If you wish for it to be sent elsewhere, please notify our office.

REGISTRATION FEE Fee includes the summit, lunch, breaks and reception. All sessions will also be recorded.

Non-Member: $300 per person

Cancellation Policy: 100% refund if canceled Oct. 20 or prior. 75% refund if canceled Oct. 21-23. No refund if canceled Oct. 24 or later. Substitutions allowed at any time.

9:15–10:00 a.m. Leadership from the Second Row and Beyond

David Owen, President, South Dakota Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Sioux Falls
Leadership means different things to different people. Join David Owen as he discusses the difference between leading “front and center” and leading from the second row… and beyond. Owen will share stories of key leaders with whom he has worked and what makes them stand out. Owen grew up in Rapid City and attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. He has been a chamber of commerce executive his entire career, meaning he has avoided both private and public sector employment. After serving as the assistant manager of the Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce, Owen ran local chambers in Pittsburg, Kan., and Missoula, Mont. He served as president of the Montana Chamber of Commerce for six years before becoming president of the South Dakota Chamber of Commerce & Industry in 1998.

The translation of the Latin phrase “carpe diem” is “Seize the Day.” Tune in to learn how you can make the most of your day by increasing your focus and your productivity.

Socially-distanced networking is a rather oxymoronic phrase! For the next 45 minutes, get your game on for a COVID-safe opportunity to “connect” (at least six-feet apart), “engage” (albeit through masks) and get to know your colleagues.

11:15 a.m.–noon Developing Cultural Intelligence for a Changing World

Cultural intelligence is a critical part of setting yourself apart in today’s globalized world of artificial intelligence, machine learning and innovation. It’s the ability to relate and work effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds, and it goes beyond existing notions of cultural sensitivity and awareness. With cultural intelligence, you’ll know how to strategically use cultural differences to come up with more innovative solutions. James Rattling Leaf, Sr. is a certified associate trainer in cultural intelligence with a specialty in tribal/indigenous ways of knowing. He has 25 years of experience as a cross cultural/broker resource to the federal government, higher education institutions and nonprofits in developing and maintaining positive, ongoing working relationships with federally and non-federally recognized Indian tribes, tribal colleges and universities, and tribal communities. Rattling Leaf is a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe and has a degree from Sinte Gleska University.

12:45–1:30 p.m. I’m Not Dead Yet: Insights & Observations About the Legislative Process

Curt Everson, President (soon to be retiring), South Dakota Bankers Association, Pierre
Join Curt Everson as he muses about the legislative process and how you can get involved and become influential in your communities. As the president of the SDBA, Everson has been responsible for the Association’s government relations activities since 2002. He will talk about the impact that emerging bank leaders can have on advocacy and how and where they can get involved. He will explain the process of legislation, how to develop relationships with local lawmakers, and state versus national advocacy. Prior to working for the SDBA, Everson worked for the State of South Dakota including leading the Bureau of Finance and Management for seven years. Everson is retiring from the SDBA at the end of the year.

1:30–2:15 p.m. Grateful Ways, Amazing Days

V.J. Smith, Professional Speaker & Author, Brookings
Mark Twain penned, “Always be grateful. This will gratify some people and amaze the rest.” V.J. Smith has been on a million-mile journey. During that time, he’s met countless people whose lives were forever changed by acts of gratitude—not received but given. “This is life changing stuff, and I’m anxious to share their stories,” he said. Smith has been a professional speaker for more than a decade. He is also a published author. Smith has also been a bill collector, solar collector salesman and a fund raiser. Drawing on his lifetime experiences, Smith peppers his talks with anecdotes and personal stories to illustrate key points. He feels he is better equipped to be a storyteller, not a preacher. A graduate of South Dakota State University in Brookings, Smith is also the author of the book “The Richest Man in Town.”

2:15–2:30 p.m. Ripple Notes

Following Smith’s presentation about gratitude, create a custom envelope and express your gratitude to the recipient of your choice. Join Amy Fordyce as she shares her “Ripple Notes” exercise and guides us further down a path of gratitude. From Prole, Iowa, Fordyce is known throughout the tri-state area as the “envelope lady.” She and her colleague have joined forces to resurrect the art of the hand-written note and radiate joy into the world, one envelope at a time.

Ernest Hemingway said, “When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen.” To help us prepare for our next session,
we will tap into our inner Picasso, open up our ears and have a little fun!

3:00–3:45 p.m. Creating Candid Conversations

It isn’t always about how smart you are, rather how effective you are in creating powerful conversations to build trusting relationships and mutual success. Business at its core is about people connecting with people, with everything happening through conversations. If you are ready to expand your conversation skills to help you create buy-in for your ideas, make better-informed decisions and obtain committed action from others, this session is for you. Nan Gesche is an energetic speaker and trainer whose passion is to “help people play well together.” She has been helping Fortune 500 companies, small organizations and individuals improve their communication skills, teamwork and leadership by helping them work through challenging conversations so that they can get back to the business of reaching their goals. Gesche provides a chance to ponder and practice different ways of thinking and acting.
